Wow, this is a great post Dr. Rosser! Thanks for the quick rundown on how and why this is the way it is- I'll definitely keep it in mind. My workouts have been so much more effective since I've been seeing you and reading your blog. Thanks!

Good post. I have tried a broad range of muscle building workouts over the years, but I think it is obvious for anybody that the central compound strength exercises work best for concrete muscle growth. The more pounds you can whack on the bar the more strength you shall gain and the more muscle you will grow, it's quite simple really.

Hi Ryan! Rest is the best treatment for the concussion, but they still should be evaluated. In the office, I most often will refer them to their medical practitioner or an emergency facility depending on the severity. I also do my best to help them understand the injury when they come back to me. Often, I will also refer patients for speech therapy or occupational therapy if they are having difficulties with daily tasks. They do functional evaluations to find what areas of the brain were injured. Hope that helps! Here's more info if you like: http://www.emedicinehealth.com/concussion/article_em.htm

Hi, Monica! Great question! Although the mechanism is somewhat up for debate, I'll give you my understanding of it at this point: The safest answer, in my opinion, is that the foam roller is providing a deep, localized stretch to the muscles, fascia, and soft tissue as you roll over it. Over time, this can help make trigger points, knots, and adhesions/scar tissue more pliable. In that way, it can improve movement, range of motion, circulation, etc. I also think that it can help mobilize some of the congestion/swelling that builds up in muscles as they repair and recover from exercise. That can create a more clear pathway for the efficient delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the muscles. Hope sheds some light on it for you! Thanks for the question! APR

I heard that the foam rollers release something that builds up when you work out, but do you know what it really does the soft tissue? I've always been curious.
